Requirements for Researchers

Requirements for Graduate Researchers

Graduate researchers are students working on their own project towards graduation. They must be working towards a clearly defined research agenda approved through their home institution. The graduate researcher will work collaboratively with their designated supervisor or mentor at their home institution, and with their supervisor(s) at the Icelandic Seal Center. Master students or Ph.D. students working in the field of tourism or wildlife tourism management at Hólar University are expected to take an online course for ECTS credits. Proposed research projects must be approved through the Research Department(s) at the Icelandic Seal Center before a research project can take place. Graduate researchers, unless through another funding body, are not paid.

Our Graduate Research Policy

Graduate researchers are student researchers working on their own projects towards the requirement for graduation. They must have a clearly defined research agenda approved through their home institution. Coordination of the graduate research work is between the graduate researcher, their designated supervisor or mentor at their home institution, and the supervisor at the Icelandic Seal Center. Once the research project is approved through the Icelandic Seal Center, the researcher will be supervised by a specialist in the Seal Research Department or the Tourism Research Department during their fieldwork. A formal agreement must be made between the researcher’s home institution and the Icelandic Seal Center. Graduate researchers working towards a degree in the field of tourism or wildlife tourism management at Hólar University are expected to take an online course.

Criteria that must be met to qualify as a graduate researcher:

  • The graduate researcher is currently enrolled in a graduate program or a research program or project.
  • The research project is developed by the graduate student with guidance from their supervisor(s).
  • There must be a formal agreement between the Icelandic Seal Center and the home institution.
  • The graduate researcher is expected to work independently and in coordination with their supervisor(s).
  • The researcher’s supervisory and program requirements must be coordinated by the home institution.
  • Graduate researchers working towards a degree in the field of tourism or wildlife tourism management at Hólar University are expected to take an online course.
  • Workspace will be coordinated with supervisory from the Icelandic Seal Center and the researcher.
  • A research proposal presentation at the Icelandic Seal Center is expected before formally collecting data in the field.
